ESPO congratulates the Port of Den Oever and the Port of Baku on achieving EcoPorts’ environmental management standard (PERS)

20 October 2021

ESPO congratulates the Port of Den Oever (The Netherlands) and the Port of Baku (Azerbaijan) on being certified through the EcoPorts’ environmental management standard (PERS). This is Baku’s second PERS certification since they joined the EcoPorts network in 2018, and Den Oever’s third PERS certification since 2014. These feats demonstrate the efforts of these ports in protecting their marine environment, facilitating the circular economy and pushing for better energy efficiency.

Isabelle Ryckbost, ESPO Secretary General, commented: “The number of European ports renewing their certifications keeps growing, now amounting to 27. It is very gratifying to see two good examples of environmental management and engagement in the ports of Den Oever and Baku. These two ports have different but very interesting profiles, and are regularly renewing their PERS certifications. We wish them all the best in their continued environmental management work in the coming years.”

Valter Selén, ESPO Senior Policy Advisor and EcoPorts Coordinator, said: “I am very pleased to see that the Port of Den Oever and the Port of Baku have successfully renewed their EcoPorts PERS certificates. The PERS certification of both these ports shows that no matter the nature of port activities, it is still possible to commit to environmental management!”

The Port of Baku receives its second PERS certification

PERS is the only port-specific environmental standard. The last five years have seen important increases in its recognition and membership, with 121 ports from 26 countries currently counting themselves as part of the EcoPorts network, and 27 ports holding PERS certification. Compliance with the EcoPorts’ PERS standard is independently assessed by Lloyd’s Register and the certificate has a validity of two years. EcoPorts’ PERS is revised after the 2-year period to make sure that the port continues to meet the requirements.
