PERS-certification of the two Spanish ports of Ceuta and Valencia renewed

30 January 2023

ESPO congratulates the ports of Ceuta (Spain) and Valencia (Spain) for being certified through the EcoPorts’ environmental management standard (PERS). The Port of Ceuta joined the EcoPorts’ network in 2018 and is PERS-certified for the third time whereas the Port Authority of Valencia is a long-standing EcoPorts’ member and is getting certified for the seventh time, demonstrating the efforts of the two Spanish ports in protecting the Mediterranean Sea.

Isabelle Ryckbost, ESPO Secretary General, commented: “I would like to congratulate the Ports of Ceuta and Valencia with this new PERS Certification. By having the highest number of PERS certified ports in the EU, Spanish ports prove their engagement towards environmental performance, monitoring and transparency.”

Valter Selén, ESPO Senior Policy Advisor and EcoPorts Coordinator, said: “Whilst two very different ports, the PERS certification of the Port of Ceuta and Valencia Port show that Spanish ports have a common commitment towards environmental sustainability and continuous self-improvement through the EcoPorts Network. We are happy to continue working with these two ports as parts of greening efforts in Europe.”

PERS (Port Environmental Review System) is the only port-specific environmental standard. The last five years have seen important increases in its recognition and membership, with 104 ports from 25 countries currently counting themselves as part of the EcoPorts Network, and 31 ports holding PERS certification. Compliance with the EcoPorts’ PERS standard is independently assessed by Lloyd’s Register and the certificate has a validity of two years. EcoPorts’ PERS is revised after the 2-year period to make sure that the port continues to meet the requirements.
