Port of Kiel: Methanol: Alternative Marine Fuel

06 May 2021

In the context of the 2015 increase air emissions standards in the Baltic Sea emissions control area (ECA), the Port of Kiel and its partners looked to the use of cleaner fuels. Methanol does not contained sulphur - so passes the ECA criteria - and emits a reduced amount of NOx, PM and CO2 compared to traditional fuel. Thus the deployment of methanol as a marine fuel may offer an medium-term answer to marine emissions in an economically viable way. As such, the Stena Germanica ferry has been converted to use methanol as a fuel in its routes between Gothenburg and Kiel.
