Onshore Power Supply (OPS) in four Northern European Ports by 2030
10 February 2025
Four Northern European ports: Aarhus, Gothenburg, Bremerhaven, and Stockholm, have secured €18.8 million in EU funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for the EU.OPS.Network project. By 2030, these ports will implement onshore power supply (OPS) systems to reduce emissions from moored containerships, aligning with upcoming EU regulations which require ships over 5,000 gross tonnages to use OPS while docked.
The initiative aims to significantly cut CO2 and nitrogen oxide emissions, offering environmental, local air quality, and workplace benefits by enabling ships to use grid electricity instead of diesel engines.
