The Port of Antwerp-Bruges leads in providing carbon-free heat to Boortmalt industrial company

On 29 February, 2024, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges launched the Antwerp North Heat Network project. This network features pipelines extending across the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, linking the Indaver Antwerp and Boortmalt sites. Boortmalt will now use residual heat from Indaver as an alternative to natural gas and combined heat and power (CHP) for its malt production. Notably, this is Belgium's first 'open access' heat network, allowing new suppliers and customers to participate.

By utilising residual heat, Boortmalt saves a substantial amount of natural gas, equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 10,000 households. The cooled water (65°C) is then circulated back to Indaver through a separate pipeline for reuse. This innovative approach demonstrates a sustainable solution, reducing energy consumption and benefiting both industries involved. The establishment of a connection point linking a residential heat network to the social housing of Woonhaven Antwerp marks a significant step towards sustainability and efficiency.
