Port of Gothenburg, North Sea Port and Port of Antwerp-Bruges pioneering the world’s first green ammonia route

01 July 2024

The Port of Gothenburg, North Sea Port, and DFDS, are joined by the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in enhancing their Green Shipping Corridor. Their collaboration focuses on advancing electrification and ammonia bunkering to bolster their green initiatives. In 2022, the initial partners signed an MoU to decarbonise the shipping corridor between Sweden and Belgium and develop a scalable solution. The recent inclusion of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges further bolsters this commitment.

The Green Shipping Corridor spans 2,500 kilometres from northern to southern Europe, connecting 11 countries from Norway to Spain via sea, land, and rail routes. In this sense, ports like Gothenburg, North Sea Port, and Antwerp-Bruges serve as key transportation hubs and centers of industrial activity within this corridor. Their goal is to achieve nearly zero-emission transport along this critical transport route. By 2030, DFDS, plans to deploy two ammonia-fuelled ro-ro vessels on routes between Sweden and Belgium, potentially establishing the world's inaugural green ammonia shipping corridor for freight vessels.
