Renewable energy plan of the Port of Barcelona

06 May 2021

Looking to further boost its green credentials, the Port of Barcelona has investigated the possibility of renewable energy generation within the port area. An initial study found that the photovoltaic generation potential of all the port area is around 92 MWp and its annual electricity generation could reach up to 120,000 GWh. While the potential of solar energy is promising, the investigation found wind generation impossible in the port the height limitation imposed by the nearby airport. As a result of the studies, photovoltaic panels will be installed in the Port Authority’s buildings. Furthermore, a shared consumption system with other areas of the port will be promoted to facilitate the uptake of photovoltaic electricity by tenants. The objective is for photovoltaic energy to cover a third of the electrical consumption of all the facilities located in the port area. As such, the Port has acted directly on buildings under its own control, while playing the role of active facilitator to encourage its port ecosystem to transition to sustainable energy alternatives.
