Shore Power for cruise ships and RoRo-ferries at the Port of Kiel

Kiel’s first shore power supply plant has been in operation at the Norwegenkai Terminal since May 2019, supplying the ferries of the Color Line shipping company. This facility supplies the ships with 10kV and 50Hz of power and delivers around 4 million kWh of shore power on an annual basis.
This facility having been a full success resulted in the Port planning and building a second shore power facility, which will supply cruise ships berthing at Kiel’s Ostseekai with shore power of up to 16MVA at either 6.6 or 11 kV. Simultaneously, the Stena line vessels at Kiel’s Schwedenkai will also be supplied with shore power at the same time, the simultaneous provision of shore power at this volume being a novelty in Germany. Due to the diverse requirements of different international cruise and ferry shipping companies in regards to how to supply shore power, Port of Kiel had to develop a customised solution featuring its own high voltage substation and two different customised cable management systems. This system has been in operation since the summer of 2020. The dimension of the facility with an 110kV cable connection, its own port owned-substation, the dimension of 16 megavolt ampere and the possibility of parallel provisioning of shore-side power built according to the applicable ISO standards is unique for Germany to date. The Port only uses 100% green power when supplying its customers with shore power.
