Six European ports to create green shipping corridors
23 August 2024
Six European ports (Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Port of Tallinn, Port of Helsinki, Port of HaminaKotka, Freeport of Riga and Klaipeda Port) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to expedite the creation of green shipping corridors and advance the decarbonisation of the marine sector in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea.
Through this MoU, the ports and the carrier company X-Press Feeders will pool resources and expertise to develop and implement sustainable practices for maritime operations. The parties will collaborate to further develop infrastructure for the provision and bunkering of alternative fuels such as green methanol, encourage the development of supply chains for fuel with zero or near-zero greenhouse gas emissions, and provide additional training programs for port workers and seafarers on handling alternative fuels. They will leverage digital platforms to enhance port call optimisation and hold regular meetings to update and discuss progress on actions for further developing green shipping corridors. The MoU underscores the collective dedication to broader decarbonisation efforts within the maritime sector.
