The Port of Gothenburg conducts hydrogen-powered excavation
02 September 2024
The Port of Gothenburg has completed one of its largest infrastructure projects to date, using cutting-edge hydrogen generator technology to perform emission-free excavation work. The generator, a scalable and portable plug-and-play solution, includes fuel cell modules, power electronics, cooling, auxiliary systems, and an intelligent control system. Pilot tests at Arendal 2, a new terminal area in the Port of Gothenburg, mark the first field test of Hitachi Energy's hydrogen generator. The generator has been using green hydrogen from Linde Gas to power an on-site charging station, which supplies electricity to a Volvo electric excavator. This excavator is part of a major infrastructure project creating 140,000 square meters of new terminal area. Arendal 2, the largest terminal development in the port since the 1970s, uses innovative techniques for stabilising and solidifying contaminated dredged material.
With this sustainable and innovative project, the Port of Gothenburg aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 70 percent, from Vinga out to sea and across the entire Gothenburg area on land.
