The Port of Hamburg implements onshore power supply (OPS) for container ships

07 October 2024

The Port of Hamburg has been successfully providing onshore power supply (OPS) to cruise ships for several years, and will now extend this technology to cargo container ships as well. This makes the Port of Hamburg the first in Europe to offer shore power for both container ships and cruise ships.

The Port of Hamburg has invested around €13 million in a new shore power plant at the Container Terminal Hamburg (CTH), which will provide 7.5 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of renewable energy to each of the terminal's three mega-ship berths. The federal government covered 50% of the costs through the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. The Hamburg Port Authority is finalising contracts with shipping companies for the use of onshore power supply, building on existing agreements. There are Senate plans to further expand onshore power facilities at Container Terminal Burchardkai and Container Terminal Altenwerder, with ongoing ship integration tests and technical inspections to ensure compatibility.
