The Port of Tenerife provides onshore power supply (OPS) to ferries
23 August 2024
The onshore power supply (OPS) connection provided through the Port of Tenerife’s electricity grid allows the Armas Trasmediterránea ferry ships' auxiliary engines to stay switched off at night.
This connection to the terrestrial electricity grid, provided by the Port Authority of Tenerife, powers refrigeration systems, lighting, and emergency equipment from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., reducing noise and improving air quality. Additionally, the use of biofuels made from agricultural waste further lowers emissions and supports circular economy.
This initiative marks the progress of the port towards sustainability goals, emphasising their adherence to European regulations and commitment to local well-being. Besides, it is to be noted that the Port Authority is surpassing the EU 2030 requirements by planning to electrify all its ports by 2027. Their next steps involve focusing on cruise ship and cargo terminal connections to achieve substantial reductions in carbon emissions.
