Valencia’s Port Authority and City Council to install a device generating energy from waves

12 June 2022

Valenciaport plans to install a wave energy converter (WEC) designed to generate green electricity. The device will be located in the hammerhead of the Marina where waves flow freely. The WEC will occupy a total surface area of 105 m2 and is expected to be operational by 2023. It will not affect navigation in any way.

Federico Torres, head of Ecological Transition of the Port Authority of Valencia, said: "This project is in line with the PAV’s strategic line of decarbonisation and the commitment to renewable sources within the framework of the Valenciaport 2030 objective: zero emissions".

The new device will generate around 130,000 kilowatts per year, reducing the city’s annual CO₂ production by 16 tonnes. The estimated cost of the device is €495,000 project and is 50% co-financed by the City Council and the European Union.
