Port of Klaipeda: Energy Efficient Stevedoring

06 May 2021

As part of the Klaipėda port authority’s efforts to green its port area, it has encouraged its tenants to reduce their carbon footprint. Since 2016 the stevedoring company Bega has replaced traditional locomotives with electrical equipment that is both economically and ecologically superior. The robot is programmed not only to move the wagons, but also to divide and sort them into different railway branches. A total of four electric robotic locomotives, which were developed and manufactured using old diesel locomotives, are currently operating in the port. The modernisation programme of railway locomotives envisages that the company will run a total of eight such robots at the same time, achieving energy efficiency targets and reducing emissions at the heart of the port activities.
