Green corridor between the Ports of Helsinki and Tallinn

28 June 2024

Stakeholders from Finland and Estonia signed a Memorandum of Understanding in October 2023 to establish a green shipping corridor linking the Helsinki-Tallinn and Vuosaari-Muuga routes. The cities and ports of Helsinki and Tallinn, along with shipping companies and the Estonian Ministry of Climate, are among the signatories.

The Green Corridor initiative includes several projects to promote alternative fuels, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and biofuel, both offshore and onshore, in Helsinki and Tallinn. These efforts aim to reduce emissions and adopt zero or near-zero emission solutions, with the goal of achieving emission reduction targets ahead of previous commitments.

A key focus of the initiative is reducing emissions from the two million vehicles crossing the Gulf of Finland annually. Both ports have set a target of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and will implement collaborative roadmaps to accelerate progress toward net-zero emissions.
