Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) to install its first shore-side power stations for containerships

12 August 2022

Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) has commissioned the construction of a new shore-side power stations for containerships that will deliver green electricity. They will be located at container terminals Burchardkai and Tollerort.  Each of the terminals will be equipped with an extraction point from the public grid, a converter station and the respective ship connection systems at the quay wall.

This new power system, which will be built by Siemens AG starting from 2023, will be modelled after the first shore-side power station for cruise ships in Europe in operation at the Hamburg Cruise Center Altona since 2016. This project is conducted in line with the city’s air purification plan and constitutes an important step for the decarbonisation of the port and logistics chains. The project is being funded through the Administrative Agreement for the Construction of Shore Power Facilities, under which the German federal government will provide financial assistance to the federal states for the construction of shore power facilities in sea and inland ports until 2023.
