Installation of CO2 capture unit at hydrogen plant in the port of Rotterdam
02 January 2025
To provide decarbonised hydrogen to its long-term customers, Air Liquide has decided to construct, own, and manage a carbon capture unit expected to be operational in 2026. This unit will be installed at its hydrogen production facility in the Port of Rotterdam and will be linked to Porthos, one of Europe’s largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructures.

To capture CO2 from its existing hydrogen plant in the Rotterdam port, Air Liquide will use their cryogenic process for CO2 capture. In this sense, the captured CO2 will then be transported via the Porthos infrastructure, currently under development, and permanently stored in depleted gas fields in the North Sea, about 20 kilometres off the coast.
