New LNG bunkering terminal at the Port of Bilbao

11 February 2022

The Port of Bilbao will soon have an LNG bunkering terminal, built by the Spanish energy company Repsol. The facility will be used to supply marine LNG to Brittany Ferries’ gas-powered Salamanca and Santoña, which will begin operations in 2022 and 2023 respectively. The Bilbao terminal will have a cryogenic tank with a storage capacity of 1,000 cubic metres, which allows the natural gas to be kept in a liquid state at -160ºC.

The Salamanca and Santoña will also call at the neighbouring Port of Santander, which will feature an LNG terminal with identical capacity. Both terminals are co-financed by the European Commission through the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) Programme.
