Phasing out fossil fuel in Copenhagen-Malmö Port
26 September 2024
Copenhagen- Malmö Port (CMP) has made a significant commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by transitioning to fossil-free fuel. CMP began in November 2023 using hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO100) for its machines at the container terminal. Initially, newer terminal tractors, rear loaders, and industrial trucks will be supplied with HVO100, aiming to reduce fossil diesel consumption by approximately 60,000 litters per year, resulting in a reduction of about 130 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Additionally, CMP ordered in April 2023 new straddle carriers with a battery-hybrid drive line, which will also use HVO100 once they come into service. The container terminal's large ship-to-shore cranes and work vehicles are already powered exclusively by electricity from renewable sources. Looking ahead, CMP plans to move its container terminal in Copenhagen to Ydre Nordhavn by 2025, anticipating that all terminals will be free of fossil fuels by that time. This transition represents a significant step towards sustainability and reducing emissions in the port's operations.
