Port of Gandía, Valenciaport is set to become Europe’s first energy self-sufficient port

Valenciaport has awarded a contract for the installation and maintenance of the solar power plant to the local company Electromur. The project, which has a capacity of 990 MWh per year, is expected to make Gandía (one of the ports operated by Valenciaport), the first port in Europe to be self-sufficient in terms of energy. The Port of Gandía will have a photovoltaic system for its own use, with solar panels on the roof of Shed 4, which has a surface area of 4,500 square metres. Electrical energy storage systems will also be installed.
This project is financed by support from European Union funds and the Spanish Government. Valenciaport plans to invest €130m in sustainability to achieve the 2030 zero emissions strategic goal, reducing fossil fuel dependency and promoting energy security. Last year, the Port Authority joined the World Ports Climate Action Programme, a club of twelve international ports committed to decarbonising and reducing emissions.
Valenciaport is also planning the installation of two more solar power plants, wind turbines and two electrical substations to connect the engines of ships docking at the port to the electricity grid in the port of Valencia.
