Port of Portsmouth improves its onshore power supply (OPS) connection for cruise and ferry
26 September 2024
The implementation of the onshore power supply (OPS) project is integral to the Port of Portsmouth's strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030 and to emerge as the UK's inaugural zero-emissions port by 2050. This initiative will significantly enhance air quality within the port vicinity and its neighbouring areas, offering substantial benefits to the local community. The system is due for installation in the fourth quarter of 2024 and expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2025.
The new system will allow vessels to turn off their engines while at berth, avoiding annual CO2 emissions for the vessels calling at the Portsmouth International Port by an estimated 20,000 metric tonnes from 2027. The installation will serve two ferry berths – each with five connection points – and an additional berth shared by ferries and cruise ships. Portsmouth International Port is demonstrating proactive commitment to environmental sustainability through its Sea Change project and ambitious goals for emissions reduction.
