Renewable energy and sustainable fuels in the Port of Amsterdam

06 May 2021

The Port of Amsterdam has traditionally played a central role in the distribution of energy products, with a focus on the shipping and storage of fossil fuels. Following the Paris Climate Agreement, the Port of Amsterdam announced that it would fully phase out coal from the port by 2030. The Port likewise developed a broad range of initiatives to increase the levels of renewable energy and alternative fuels in the port, in order to become an international sustainable energy hub and at the same time a ‘sustainable battery for the city’. Projects and initiatives include:

  • Increasing the number of solar panels in the port (by area) from 50.024 m2 in 2018 to 91.453 m2 in 2019 with energy put back into the city’s grid;
  • The development of the first hydrogen pump station, alongside Holthausen, to be operational in 2021. Similarly, together with Tata Steel and Nouryon, Amsterdam is developing a green hydrogen production facility of 100 MW;
  • Together with SkyNRG, Tata Steel and KLM, the Port of Amsterdam is conducting research to develop a pilot production facility for synthetic kerosene.
