The Port of Algeciras collaborates in a project to install artificial reefs in Tarifa Port

23 August 2024

The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras collaborates with the University Institute for Marine Research (INMAR) at the University of Cadiz, and the Ministry of Sustainability, Environment, and Blue Economy of Andalusia to deploy six Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS) in Tarifa Port.

These installations are part of the GIBMAR-BB project, funded by Next Generation EU funds and coordinated by CEIĀ·Mar Foundation. The Strait of Gibraltar is internationally recognized for its rich biodiversity, housing many species at risk and unique to the region. It serves as a critical monitoring point for the introduction and spread of non-native species into the Mediterranean due to its strategic location.

In this respect, the project aims to monitor marine biodiversity in the Strait of Gibraltar and Gulf of Cadiz by mimicking natural rocky habitats to detect and manage exotic species early. This initiative is crucial for understanding and preserving biodiversity in this key Mediterranean entry point, impacted by global change and human activity.
