The Port of Antwerp-Bruges to implement methanol bunkering

02 January 2025

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges will implement methanol bunkering. During its stay at the MSC PSA European Terminal (MPET) at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the ‘Ane Maersk’ vessel bunkered 4,300 tonnes of green methanol and 1,375 tonnes of biodiesel (B100). The port is committed to providing multifuel-ready facilities and greening its own fleet with alternative fuels.

The bunkering operation, integrated with the vessel's cargo operations, enhanced efficiency by combining refuelling with loading and unloading. This operation marks a milestone in the port's ambition to become a multifuel hub offering various climate-neutral fuels like hydrogen, ammonia, methane, and methanol. The port also has capacity to store these fuels for industrial and hinterland distribution. The Ane Maersk's call is part of its maiden voyage fuelled by green methanol, making it the world's second methanol-enabled container vessel and the first of Maersk's 18 such vessels set to be delivered by 2025.
