The Port of Bilbao WINDHUB project

31 December 2024

The Port Authority of Bilbao (PAB), which is a key hub for offshore wind energy, is constrained by limited space with a 90.2% occupancy rate. This fact makes it difficult to handle all offshore wind operations in one location. To address this, the PAB is investing €71 million in the BilbaoPort WINDHUB project. This initiative is part of the 2024 Business Plan and aims to expand and enhance the port's offshore wind transport and logistics capabilities, supporting the EU’s zero-emission goals.

The project focuses on three main pillars: Firstly, on reclaiming 31 hectares of land to boost industrial capacity using sustainable materials, secondly on expanding green energy infrastructure by adding 11 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind energy. The last key aspect focuses on launching BilbaoPortLab, whose goal is to foster innovation and collaboration in offshore wind logistics. Overall, the WINDHUB project is designed to improve port efficiency while advancing green energy goals.
