The Port of Valletta launched onshore power supply (OPS)
31 December 2024
Malta has introduced onshore power supply (OPS) technology at the Grand Harbour, which makes it the first port in the Mediterranean to connect cruise liners to the local electric grid. This system can power up to five cruise liners simultaneously, aiming to reduce pollution by 90% for 17,000 nearby residents by 2030.
This system was inaugurated after an eight-month trial, where the MSC World Europa successfully switched off its engines and used local electricity while docked. This aligns with Malta’s decarbonisation strategy and the EU’s requirement for cruise liners to adopt onshore power supply (OPS). MSC Cruises also presented its goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
