Port of Amsterdam: Using batteries to charge larger vessels at berth

06 May 2021

In line with its 2021-2025 strategy, which includes the goal of achieving clean shipping, the Port of Amsterdam has successfully used a battery filled with local wind energy to charge a short sea vessel at one of its terminals. The battery used in the test can supply 630 kWh of electricity, which corresponds to at least twelve hours of shore power. This was a first promising test to demonstrate the feasibility of charging larger seagoing ships using batteries, which was already possible for smaller ships used for inland navigation.
