Hamburg Port Authority and the SeaClear project

Hamburg Port Authority combats ocean pollution thanks to an EU Horizon 2020 funded project named SeaClear (2020-2023). 94% of marine debris is assumed to be located on the seabed itself, whereas up until now, it has mostly been divers who have collected waste from the ground.
The project is working on autonomous robots to find and collect seabed litter. Thanks to underwater detection sensors, the robots can operate under low-visibility conditions. Using artificial intelligence (AI), they are trained to differentiate between marine wildlife and debris. The collection is then performed by a larger robot that navigates to the location where waste has been found and removes it using a gripper-suction device.
Moreover, Hamburg Port Authority is engaging with local communities to raise awareness for ocean pollution, also exchanging with various stakeholders and the public.
