Hydrogen production at the Port of Rotterdam

11 February 2022

The Port of Rotterdam Authority and Energy company Uniper have signed an MoU for developing the production of green hydrogen at the Uniper location on Maasvlakte, making Rotterdam an international hub for hydrogen production and import and for the transit of hydrogen to other countries in Northwestern Europe. These plans build on the findings of a recent feasibility study showing that the location on Maasvlakte is ideally suitable for large-scale production of green hydrogen with the use of power generated by North Sea wind farms.

The next key step in the Uniper project is the FEED (front-end engineering & design) study for the conceptual design and project planning of an electrolysis installation (100MW initially and with a future capacity increase to 500MW).

Another hydrogen production project is the Holland Hydrogen I facility, in collaboration with Shell and Thyssenkrupp, which will be located on the second Maasvlakte. Specifically, the project is to be one of the largest hydrogen plants in the world with a capacity of 200 MW based on its large-scale 20 MW alkaline water electrolysis module.

The first construction work for the electrolysers will likely begin in spring 2022 and the plant should be operational and produce green hydrogen from 2024, thanks to electricity coming from offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust (Noord). The hydrogen can be transported through a 40 kilometres pipeline that will run from the plant to Shell’s Energy and Chemicals Park in Rotterdam. The plant will use reusable construction materials wherever possible, with solar panels on the outside walls of the plant.
