North Adriatic Sea Port Authority (NASPA): Increasing energy efficiency in port and terminal activities and establishing an energy strategy

06 May 2021

Conscious of its role as a role-model, the North Adriatic Sea Port Authority (NASPA) has, since 2009, been looking into ways to reduce its carbon footprint through energy efficiency improvements throughout the authority’s premises. Given that lighting represents a fifth of consumed electricity, a number of projects have been implemented to improve energy efficiency in areas directly managed by NASPA. These include a new LED lighting system on the public road and a new LED lighting system supported by solar panels along 15km of one of the main port canals, the Malamocco-Marghera canal. NASPA has also led projects on areas managed by terminals, such as a new LED lighting system on wide operational areas and the realisation of infrastructures for the adoption of electric cranes. The result of these measures are a reduction of around 70% of electricity use.
