Port of Roenne’s expansion to support offshore wind sector
31 December 2024
The Port of Roenne's expansion project aligns with the port's master plan, as it enhances its capability to support offshore wind shipping and strengthens its position in the Baltic Sea. This project solidifies the port’s role as a key hub for green energy, accelerating its harbour expansion to support the growing demand for offshore wind energy. Despite weather challenges, the work was completed in 2022, with significant local investment and further investment expansions were done in 2023 to continue future-proofing the port.
With Baltic countries aiming to increase offshore wind electricity sevenfold by 2030, the port of Roenne is enhancing its capacity to handle multiple wind projects. Recently, it has served as a staging area for major wind farms, including Scandinavia's largest, 'Kriegers Flak.' Additionally, the port is involved in initiatives like the Bornholm Bunker Hub and the European Green Corridors Network to promote green shipping in the region.
Furthermore, the Port of Roenne is contributing to the establishment of green shipping corridors in the Baltic and North Seas as part of the European Green Corridors Network. This initiative, led by the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Centre for Zero Carbon Shipping, includes key ports like Hamburg, Gdynia, Rotterdam, and Tallinn. The network aims to commercialize alternative fuel supply chains, support early adopters, and develop plans to expand green corridors across Europe.
