Waste Heat in the Port of Antwerp
06 May 2021
Port of Antwerp is taking steps to recover waste heat from a waste incineration facility and connect it for district heating. This project would be the biggest hot water network in Flanders, with a yearly reduction of 20,000 tons of CO2. As well as support from partners including the City of Antwerp, Indaver and Fluvius, the Flemish government will provide the project with an investment support of €15.7 million. Waste heat is already used for industrial processes and energy generation, but remaining heat is still suited for district heating and would serve to implement circular economy principles while helping to heat the region’s homes.
