IMO approves proposal on mandatory verification of gross weight of containers

19 September 2013

Mid-September, the IMO’s Subcommittee on Dangerous Goods, Solid Cargoes and Containers (DSC) approved a proposal regarding the amendment of the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention.

This proposal was submitted by a number of international maritime associations (including IAPH) and requires verification of container weights before loaded containers are placed aboard ships. Furthermore, the approved proposal places the responsibility for providing accurate weight information primarily to the shippers. The whole process forward is quite long, as the proposal is pending approval by the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) in May 2014 and will potentially be adopted in November 2014. It will then still require a couple of years to enter into force.
