Port of Gothenburg: Facilitating and encouraging the uptake of Alternative Fuels

06 May 2021

The Port of Gothenburg has a number of financial incentives to incentivise vessels to connect to an onshore power supply. There is no charge for the power provided – on the contrary, vessels connected to an onshore power supply score higher in the indexes on which the environmentally discounted port charge is based. Tax on onshore power has been reduced substantially in Sweden for a number of years and is currently 0.5 öre (around 0.05 cent) per kilowatt-hour.

The Port has also been working actively to promote the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel. Since 2015, vessels can fill their tank with LNG in the Port of Gothenburg. The bunkering is possible thanks to LNG operating regulations developed by the Port in collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam which  include both bunkering from land by truck and ship-to-ship bunkering. Requirements for safety zones, weather, bunker vessels, receiving vessels, terminals and more are included in the new operating regulations.
