Port of Valencia: H2Ports
06 May 2021
The H2Ports project, funded by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking and coordinated by Fundación Valenciaport, aims to boost the transition of the European port industry towards an effective zero-emission and safe operative model. The project includes piloting, evaluating and demonstrating new Fuel Cell (FC) technologies oriented towards increasing energy efficiency, emissions reductions and the safety of port terminals. The project will involve the first tests of hydrogen technologies for port handling equipment in Europe, which represents a huge step forward for green technologies. The Port Authority of Valencia is also developing a smart energy grid system that integrates energy supplied by the Spanish network, energy produced using renewables in the port, energy storage (batteries and/or hydrogen) and hydrogen fuel production.
The H2Ports project will demonstrate two innovative solutions using fuel cell (FC) technologies and a hydrogen mobile supply station at the Port of Valencia. Specifically, a reach stacker at MSC Terminal Valencia and a yYard tTractor at Valencia Terminal Europa will be adapted for FC use. The project aims to operate these vehicles daily in real port operations to enhance energy efficiency, performance, and safety. It will also address broader issues such as human factors, regulatory aspects, and promoting hydrogen adoption as an alternative fuel in port equipment. H2Ports aims to transition European ports to a low-carbon, zero-emission, and safe operational model by piloting and demonstrating new Fuel Cell technologies. These innovations aim to increase energy efficiency, decarbonise operations, and enhance safety at port terminals, marking Europe's first trials of hydrogen technologies in port handling equipment.
The Stakeholders Group for hydrogen application in the maritime port sector was established in January 2020 and now includes over 80 member organisations from Europe, Canada, Japan, and the United States. The group's primary goal is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and best practices related to hydrogen use in maritime ports. One of its key activities is organising thematic meetings to present the latest technological advancements and share successful outcomes from real-world projects in the sector.
