North Sea Port and Port of Gothenburg establish Green Corridor to reduce emissions

16 November 2022

The Port of Gothenburg and North Sea Port are collaborating to establish a green corridor by 2025, aiming to use alternative fuels for sea vessels. This initiative led by the port authorities targets a significantly reduced climate footprint for the major volume of goods transported between Gothenburg, Sweden and Ghent, Belgium. Aligning with the Clydebank Declaration from COP26, signed by Sweden, Belgium, and 30 other nations, the ports commit to promoting the shipping industry's climate transition by supporting green marine transport operations along specified shipping routes. Both ports are adapting infrastructure, regulating sustainable fuels bunkering operations, and offering increased discounts on port dues for ships using cleaner fuels through environmental discount systems.

Additionally, the Port of Gothenburg already provides onshore power supply (OPS) at multiple terminals, including for Belgian-serving ships, enabling zero emissions by the quayside and minimising auxiliary engine use while in port. The announcement of this green corridor marks a collaborative effort between the CEOs of the Gothenburg Port Authority and North Sea Port in furthering sustainable shipping practices.
