Port of Antwerp-Bruges launches the conversion of its methanol tug
15 December 2022
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has
initiated the conversion of a tugboat to run on methanol (see: https://www.espo.be/practices/first-tugboat-using-methanol-to-be-used-in-port-of) , marking a significant
step towards sustainability. The first engine was installed on 21 November 2023,
with a dual-fuel engine, enabling the vessel to operate on both methanol and
traditional fuels. This initiative is funded by Horizon 2020 and involves
several international partners. Named the Methatug project, it stands as a
pioneering endeavour in the port's sustainability drive. Additionally, the port
welcomed the Hydrotug 1, a hydrogen-powered tugboat built in Spain, set to
undergo hydrogen system installation in Ostend, Belgium. The Hydrotug 1 is anticipated
to be fully operational in Antwerp by the first quarter of 2023. Its integration
aligns with the port's commitment to innovative and eco-friendly solutions.
