Port of Antwerp-Bruges to receive €144.6 in funding for the development of the ‘Antwerp@C CO2 Export Hub’

10 January 2023

Port of Antwerp-Bruges together with the companies Air Liquide and Fluxys Belgium are to receive €144.6 million in funding under the CEF-E program to develop the 'Antwerp@C CO2 Export Hub' (see https://www.espo.be/practices/antwerpc). This initiative aims to construct an open-access infrastructure enabling the collection, liquefaction, and loading of captured CO2 onto ships for offshore storage. The plan involves transporting CO2 from industrial sites within the Antwerp port area via an intra-port pipeline network to a shared liquefaction and export terminal. Air Liquide and Fluxys intend to form a joint venture for constructing and operating the CO2 liquefaction and export terminal, utilising Air Liquide's technology.

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has designated a strategic location and will build quay infrastructure for CO2 ships. This project is the initial phase of Antwerp@C, a collaborative effort among various industrial players aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by half in the Antwerp port area by 2030. With an initial capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per annum, the hub aspires to reach up to 10 Mtpa by 2030, facilitating future CCS initiatives by providing scalable infrastructure. The EU grant marks a significant step towards the anticipated final investment decision expected in 2023.
