Port of Antwerp launches world's first dual-fuel hydrogen straddle carrier

25 April 2023

the Port of Antwerp, with Antwerp Terminal Services (ATS), hosted a ceremony to launch the world's first H2 dual fuel straddle carrier). The machine runs on a mixture of hydrogen and diesel and uses advanced hydrogen dual-fuel combustion engine technology. It can therefore play an important role in reducing the terminal’s greenhouse gas emissions. Dual-fuel technology can replace 70 % of diesel consumption with hydrogen on new straddle carriers, with the ultimate goal of 100 % hydrogen injection, according to ATS. It is part of their plan to reduce their carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, with net-zero emissions for all their terminals by 2050, starting from 2019.
