Port of Leith to pilot Green Hydrogen Shore Power Initiative

04 October 2024

This project aims to introduce green hydrogen onshore power supply (OPS) at the UK port of Leith. This system will allow marine vessels to use clean energy while berthed, replacing diesel-powered systems currently in use. The project combines innovation and sustainability expertise from water, energy, and transport sectors, setting a precedent for port decarbonisation across the UK. In this sense, water treatment technology will produce fresh water from wastewater, which will then undergo electrolysis to generate hydrogen. PlusZero's combustion engine will use this hydrogen as fuel to generate green electricity for tug boats, eliminating the need for diesel generators.

The project aims to promote a circular economy approach to port decarbonisation, especially in remote areas lacking access to the main electricity grid. It also aims to reduce carbon emissions by 2032 and achieve net-zero status by 2042.
