Port of Nakskov: Applying Circular Economy Principles to Navigational Equipment

06 May 2021

While searching for a novel, innovative idea to improve sustainability in the port, the Port of Nakskov has decided to apply circular economy principles to key port equipment, namely red beacons. The red beacons get faded by the sun through time, meaning that they must be discarded. The Port of Nakskov has found a way to grind the beacon and repaint it, allowing it to be reused. The project boasts huge potential – Nakskov alone has about 60-70 beacons placed in the water, and each cost about €9,300. Not only is there a sustainable economic perspective in the project, it is also a step towards a more circular business model for port operations.
