Port of Rotterdam and Port of Algeciras establish the first green hydrogen corridor

12 December 2022

Port of Rotterdam signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Spanish energy company Cepsa to create the first European green hydrogen corridor, linking the southern port of Algeciras to the northern hub of Rotterdam. Anticipated to be operational by 2027, it is planned to export hydrogen produced San Roque Energy Park near Algeciras using carriers like ammonia or methanol to Rotterdam. The port of Rotterdam manages 13% of the continent's energy demand, while the port of Algeciras serves as a vital trade route between Europe and Asia. With support from the Dutch government, Rotterdam's port authority and various private entities in the area are developing infrastructure to import and distribute green hydrogen across Northwest Europe, linking industrial centers in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany through hydrogen pipelines. This collaboration aligns with Rotterdam's goal of supplying 4.6 million tonnes of green hydrogen to Northwest Europe by 2030, contributing to the region's energy transition plans.
