Port of Rotterdam to refuel ships with methanol from summer 2023
22 February 2023
From summer 2023, the Port of Rotterdam will offer regular methanol bunkering for seagoing vessels. In 2022, the Port of Rotterdam witnessed an increase in methanol sales for sea vessels, reaching 1,500 tons. Methanol, known for its easy and safe bunkering process, is gaining traction as a viable fuel option. Despite grey methanol being widely available in major ports, the production of green methanol from renewable sources lags. With rising demand for sustainable fuels and stricter emission rules, green methanol is expected to play a larger role in shipping. Its use promises significant reductions in CO2, SOx, NOx emissions, and particulate matter compared to fossil fuels.
